‘zerobeyond – the new frontier!’ has created a niche in promoting younger generation of architects, landscape architects, urban planners and interior designers. The encouraging initiative of our GEN Z Series has been applauded by both the renowned and the younger generation of professionals from all across the world. Younger generation of architects, who are showcasing their design creations and creativity in our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity have benefitted a great deal and have moved to higher places in their professional pursuit. Their achievements give me great pleasure to see them creating some of the meaningful and beautiful projects around the world in reputed firms.
From Politecnico di Milano, Italy – the GEN Z Series travels to my mother’s motherland Indonesia to meet an outstanding, creative and a kind Indonesian architect named Dhiba Esperanza. Having graduated with a B. Arch degree from University of Brawijaya, Malang, Indonesia in 2023 – Dhiba Esperanza completed her Master of Architecture – Architecture and Built Environment from the same university in January 2025. She seems to me as a born leader as Dhiba Esperanza informs, “I served as the Vice Head of the Academic Department in the Himpunan Mahasiswa Arsitektur FT UB. I was also actively involved in the Komunitas Peduli Inklusi Nusantara, demonstrating my commitment to inclusive and disability-friendly architectural design (smiles).”

Dhiba Esperanza’s humble family background is what makes her so special and compassionate towards people plagued with disability. Her father is a retired man, while Dhiba’s mother is a committed housewife. The young architect seems to be passionate about architecture. She enthuses, “I have dedicated my youth to excelling in architecture. My journey has been shaped by perseverance, academic excellence, and a passion for creating meaningful and inclusive designs. Additionally, I have participated in various delegation programs discussing tourism and had the opportunity to explore historical architecture in Turkey.”
After her post-graduation, Dhiba Esperanza joined as an Interior Designer at Dewape Design, Malang, Indonesia. She informs, “As a Junior Architect, I am working on architectural projects, landscape and master plan design, and currently specializing in interior design. Since 2022, I have been an active research assistant under the Head of the Urban Settlement Design Laboratory at my campus. I have engaged in freelance projects throughout my studies, allowing me to merge theoretical knowledge with practical experience as designer (smiles).”

Johnny D interacts with Dhiba Esperanza – the heartwarming and kind Indonesian architect – to explore her interesting quest in the field of architecture. She also elucidates her graduation thesis ‘Wisata Desa Sidodadi Master Plan, East Java’.
What was your childhood ambition? Have you always wanted to become an architect?
I found it quite fascinating that, up until my junior High School years, I had aspired to be a Psychologist due to my inquisitiveness about human nature (smiles). However, my perception of traditional schooling led me to frequently imagine creating my own educational institution, often detailing its design. By the time I reached High School, my interests shifted towards architecture. This transition reflects a consistent theme in my academic journey, as I later concentrated on urban design and human behavior during my Master’s studies.

How has architecture influenced your life as a student?
Being an architecture student is undoubtedly challenging! The hours of sleep are significantly reduced, but this sacrifice is made in pursuit of knowledge. Nevertheless, my experience as an architecture student has broadened my understanding of various human-related aspects. Architecture fundamentally arises from human needs, which adds an intriguing dimension to my studies. I have developed a deeper awareness and sensitivity towards environment.

Briefly tell us about your University and the Master’s Course.
I attended Brawijaya University, where the architecture department places a significant emphasis on Nusantara Architecture. This distinctive focus is what differentiates our department from the others. I find it particularly fascinating! During my undergraduate studies, I gained a solid foundation in design and general architectural knowledge. However, as I progressed into my final semesters, I shifted my attention towards urban settlement design. In my Master’s program in Architecture in the Built Environment, I delved deeper into the field, examining not only individual buildings, but also the broader context of areas shaped by historical and social values.

Briefly describe the significance of your project with the ‘Title of the Project and Site Location’.
Project Title: Wisata Desa Sidodadi Master Plan
Site Location: Sidodadi Village, Malang Regency, East Java
It is the most captivating project, I have worked on. It stands out as my favorite project so far, because it aligns perfectly with my academic background in landscape design, particularly from my studies in urban settlement design. The project’s concept supports the Malang City Government’s initiative to promote Tourism Villages in the area. Given its proximity to a water source, this tourist village aims to develop a Water Park and serve as a communal space for cultural performances and community gatherings. The design not only facilitates community engagement, but also presents commercial opportunities by leveraging its appeal for retail and rental activities.

Which National or International architect has inspired / influenced you? Please specify as to why?
I consider Indonesian architect Yu Sing, the Founder of Akanoma Studio, to be a role model among architects, due to his innovative approach to affordable and eco-friendly housing. His work has significantly impacted my perspective, as I believe that development plays a major role in the serious degradation of our planet. Consequently, it is essential for architects to approach design with both care and wisdom.

As an Intern, what is the most important lesson(s) you have learned from senior architects, while being a part of a project?
In my experience with project involvement, one of the key lessons I learned from a senior colleague is the importance of comprehending our designs and presenting them convincingly to clients. This requires a blend of confidence, effective communication skills and a thorough understanding of both, the materials and the designs we create, thereby fostering client’s trust. Furthermore, accuracy is crucial, as any inaccuracies in measurement can greatly impact the implementation of the design.

What role do you perform as an Interior Designer at Dewape Design, Malang, Indonesia?
I collaborate with a team of designers responsible for interpreting the survey notes from the surveyor, grasping the client’s preferences and conducting design consultations. Our tasks include creating 3D renderings and interior visualizations based on submitted requests, making necessary revisions and taking design measurements to facilitate the budget plan calculation process. Additionally, I must verify with the craftsman the feasibility of the design for construction. Once the design is implemented, I am also tasked with quality control to ensure that the builder’s work aligns with our original design.

What are the current prospects and challenges of jobs’ opportunities for fresh young architects in East Java, Indonesia? Elucidate briefly.
When comparing Malang City to major Indonesian cities like Jakarta and Surabaya, or popular city for tourist destinations like Bali – the outlook for architects in Malang remains quite challenging. Additionally, a significant hurdle is the low salary levels for architects, particularly for recent graduates.

Kayutangan Bench – Hostile Architecture in Malang
Against the ethos of architecture field, ‘Hostile Architecture’ has become an eyesore and fast changing the urban landscape of prominent cities around the world. Elucidate your perspectives about this unwanted trend in urban landscape.
In my view, ‘Hostile Architecture’ presents both advantages and disadvantages. While it effectively decreases the presence of homeless individuals sleeping in areas, where such designs are implemented, it is also crucial for the government to prioritize strategies that address homelessness more comprehensively. This includes finding ways to support homeless individuals and reducing their numbers.

Design Transition
The “Global Urban Failure” has seen all the major cities being flooded 365 days of each year. Elucidate your perspectives and solutions as to how can the future of urban planning of cities / villages can be tackled to overcome this existential crisis in respect to East Java, Indonesia?
This issue is quite complex due to the numerous factors contributing to flooding, particularly given Malang’s high density of rainfall. As an architect, I believe that promoting proper waste disposal practices is a key aspect of urban living. Effective urban design should include street furniture that encourages visitors to dispose of their trash appropriately. Furthermore, Malang has embraced the Green City concept since its design by Dutch architect Thomas Karsten. It is essential to not only maintain this initiative, but also explore opportunities for enhancement.

How would you describe Ancient Indonesian Architecture from the Modern Architecture in East Java as an Architect?
The city of Malang boasts a rich history marked by the blending of Javanese, Dutch and contemporary architectural styles. Along Jalan Kayutangan, one can observe Dutch-inspired structures designed with a mixed-use approach to ensure sustainability. Idjen Boulevard showcases a clear fusion of Javanese and Dutch architectural elements, evident in the building shapes, roof designs and window styles that have been preserved over time. Furthermore, the central axis of Malang City features a square that includes places of worship and the city hall, reflecting the distinctive cultural zoning typical of Javanese heritage.

Looking at the past in the current present, what are the futuristic architectural changes you would like to see in your home city / town Elucidate the reasons for your vision.
I would like to see the implementation of technologically advanced architectural concepts in the buildings in my campus. This would serve as an excellent demonstration of how technology can enhance the functionality of structures for architecture students.
