The conventional narrative we all were made to believe is so simple: ‘build a dam, store water, generate power, irrigate farmlands and regulate floods’. FLOODING THE FUTURE SYSTEMATICALLY
The underlying problem is not about isolated failures. Earth Crisis means heavier rainfall, more intense storms and shifting hydrological patterns. Dams designed decades ago are now facing unprecedented stress to control humongous volumes of water. Reservoirs fill faster with catastrophic cloudbursts and heavy downpour and with dams already ageing with passing decades – the pressure on infrastructure grows immensely.
When floodgates are opened to release water, downstream communities are literally sacrificed for dams’ safety. But how often are local populations warned in time? How often are they compensated? Never or not enough! Ironically, it does not end with floods – Dams block sediment flows, starving river deltas and coastlines – thereby leading to erosion, habitat loss and declining fisheries — the crucial sources of food and livelihood for millions.
Human Greed has systematically thought about everything, except innovative solutions to create alternative passage to release excess water by channelizing through huge pipelines to rivers that never get flooded ever. If Human Greed can build pipelines under seabed to transfer oil and gases across nations – Why dam engineers cannot build pipelines to release excess water as and when the need arises?

THE MORAL AND SCIENTIFIC IMPERATIVE
We have reached a fork in the road. Continuing to build and rely on more dams without acknowledging their systemic risks is suicidal and detrimental for us humans.
Nations need to:
- Honestly assess existing dams’ impact on flood risk and ecosystems, with transparency from climate scientists and water authorities.
- Incorporate Indigenous knowledge about rivers and floods, which has been long ignored by technocratic elites.
- Shift toward natural water management — restoring floodplains, wetlands, mangroves and forests that absorb floodwaters and maintain equilibrium.
- Develop early warning systems and equitable evacuation protocols to protect vulnerable communities downstream.
- Radically reconsider new dam projects: Are they necessary? Are there any other better alternatives?
The dam engineering community is not waking up to these challenges to create innovative alternate passage to release excess water during heavy downpour — but it is the duty and responsibilities of the global climate scientific community to amplify these warnings, not silence them.

FINAL WORD
Dams symbolize humanity’s hubris — the arrogance of believing we can control and rape nature with brute force and at will. However, Earth is responding in a ferocious manner to warn us – the humans. But, are we really learning anything at all from 7,000 to 11,000 Human Greed Catastrophes annually across the globe? The root cause of the Earth Crisis is human greed — and dams are one stark example. Built for profit, power and prestige, they are now threatening the very lives they had claimed to protect.
It is high time to see how catastrophic flooding of downstream regions get deadly and wash away everything that comes on the way of released water from floodgates of dams. It is high time to hold accountable those who perpetuate myths of safety, while flooding Earth into crisis.
